Building a global knowledge hub for climate finance and capacity-building resources

The Global Capacity Building Coalition (GCBC) is a global initiative that brings together leading climate finance organizations to strengthen collaboration and respond to the increasing demand for capacity-building support, particularly in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). To support this mission, a comprehensive and robust digital platform is needed to serve as a centralized knowledge hub for climate finance and capacity-building resources.

Launched in COP28 by UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions Michael R. Bloomberg, alongside other global financial leaders, GCBC aims to become the leading global network for coordinating access to climate finance training and capacity-building programs. The GCBC platform is designed to be freely accessible in multiple languages, helping eliminate barriers to vital information and accelerating climate and transition finance capacity building in EMDEs.

We worked closely with key stakeholders and partners, including Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and Systemiq, to develop the knowledge platform from the ground up. This included designing and implementing a custom curation dashboard that organizes and manages hundreds of climate finance capacity-building and technical assistance resources, case studies, and live learning opportunities hosted on the platform.

To ensure global accessibility, we also built custom multilingual capabilities into the platform, enabling content delivery in English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, and Arabic, with additional languages to be added over time. We are also actively developing an AI-powered robust natural language semantic search feature to help users from all regions and language backgrounds easily find the most relevant resources for their specific capacity-building needs.

The GCBC platform was launched in September 2024 by Michael R. Bloomberg and Mary L. Schapiro, Chair of the GCBC, and it will, as Bloomberg explained, “give free resources and technical assistance to leaders in developing countries to help them cut emissions, drive economic growth, improve public health, and save lives.”

Following the successful launch, we continue to introduce regular enhancements to the platform to improve performance, expand accessibility, and increase the effectiveness of its resources for a diverse user base. This ongoing development includes exploring custom AI tools and technologies to better address unique use cases and user needs.
